WHAT IS DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE?
Deep tissue massage uses slower, more forceful strokes to target the deeper layers of the muscle and connective tissue to help with muscle damage from injuries. It is an extremely helpful technique in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia.
Some discomfort or even some pain may occur as the massage therapist works on areas where there are adhesions (knots) or scar tissue. You should always tell your massage therapist if you feel pain during the massage. After the massage, you may feel some stiffness or soreness, but it should subside within a day or so.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE?
Deep tissue massage is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.
Deep tissue massage is also effective when it comes to injury rehabilitation. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy such as Swedish massage, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). People often notice an improved range of motion immediately after a deep tissue massage.
If you have any chronic condition, it’s important to consult your primary care provider before having a massage.
